A Chartered Accountant with over 0 years’ experience in the financial services sector, initially as an auditor and later as a consultant, non-executive director and expert witness. Stephen has extensive experience dealing with audit (both statutory and internal), financial and regulatory reporting, governance, risk management and internal control issues within almost all areas of the financial services sector. His career has had a particular focus on international and investment banking and commodity & derivatives trading. He has acted as an audit partner on various international banks, investment banks and commodity traders & brokers. In his consulting work, he continued this focus and led investigations into problems in international bank lending; bullion, oil and soft commodity trading; and exchange governance. After leaving Andersen, having reached the role of Global Head of the Financial Services practice, he held senior positions in litigation support and economic consulting, management consultancy and insurance broking. Stephen has also held numerous board positions, all of which required him to be approved by the relevant financial regulator. As a non-executive director, he has been on the board of CFS. He later joined the board of Credit Suisse’s investment bank as a non-executive director, joined the bank’s risk committee and became Chairman of its Audit Committee. He has chaired the audit committee of Wells Fargo’s broker/dealer since 2020. These positions required understanding of financial and regulatory reporting and extensive interaction with internal auditors, external auditors and prudential and conduct regulators, both in the UK and internationally. They also required a good appreciation of how boards operate and of effective governance. Stephen has extensive expert witness experience and has given evidence on a variety of financial services issues including audit and financial reporting, governance, and regulatory relationships.
